A student is someone enrolled in an affiliated academic institution who completes unpaid clinical or educational training at BayCare to earn academic credit or other educational credentials. This training may be referred to as an internship, practicum or clinical rotation. Each student reports to a BayCare team member who serves as a sponsor, mentor or student liaison.
Volunteers - Someone who gives their time without compensation and isn’t enrolled in or participating in an academic program, internship, practicum or clinical rotation through an affiliated academic institution.
Examples of volunteer positions include tram drivers, front desk support, gift shop volunteers and summer teen volunteers. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, go to our volunteer resources page.
Health care observer - Someone who wants to explore a health care career or complete observation hours (often called shadowing) before enrolling in an educational program. Contact the department you'd like to observe for specific requirements. Observation experiences depend on unit or department availability and aren't guaranteed.
Instructors - A faculty member or representative of an affiliated academic institution who oversees a student's progress and performance within an academic course, clinical rotation, internship, practicum or educational program.
During your clinical experience at a BayCare facility, you're expected to follow our policies, procedures and professional standards. BayCare uses myClinicalExchange for student onboarding and requests will be coordinated by the school. Review the steps below to complete the onboarding process.

All students follow the same process. Submit project and research requests at least four to six months before your planned start date. Complete the onboarding process above, then follow these additional steps:
1. Work with your school's director of clinical education to locate a preceptor.
2. After a preceptor has been established, email the rehabilitation education team to continue the process.
